There are so many definitions of the word ‘computer’. However, here is a simple definition; a computer is any machine that accepts data, processes the data and gives out the result. With this definition, one can see that many gadgets fall into this category. These include the calculator, Automated Teller Machine (A.T.M), phones, laptop, desktop etc.

The most talked about of all computers are phones and laptops. This is because they are the ones that solve most of humankind’s problem. So, therefore, let us take a journey through the world of the computer.

What Computer Contains

Computers contain two components; hard ware and software. A hard ware is any physical part of the computer that is visible and felt with the hands. They divided into Monitor, Central Processing Unit (C.P.U), and keyboard. Apart from these, there are other peripherals. Peripherals are external connectors that improve on the functionality of the computer. They include an external modem, hard disk, key board etc.

The monitor of a computer contains computer screen. We have different types of screen. In addition, the CPU is the powerhouse of the computer. There houses the memory, the Random Access Memory etc. lastly, the key board is used to control instructions fed into the computer.

There are two types of soft wares depending on their functions. The Operating system is a kind of software that controls all other soft wares. There are so many ranging from Windows OS by Microsoft company, Linux, Android, Mac etc. these soft wares are like a middle man between the other soft wares and the computer hard ware. Without it, the computer will simply not function.
The other software is known as apk files designed to work with a particular OS. A software program for windows will obviously not work for Mac and vice. Each software is specific in nature i.e. it solves a particular problem of the user. Examples of soft wares of this nature are Ms Word, Ms excel, browsers, power point, Corel Draw, Photoshop.

It must be noted here that most computer wizards otherwise known as the computer gurus are only experts in one or some few software. Their ability to manipulate this software better than others make them a specialist in that software. I have never seen an expert that have mastered all the known soft wares in the world (mind you the number of software for the computer are thousands if not millions and it takes months to learn some if not years).

However, before I continue, I must point out another important factor about computers. All computer manufacturers have a Basic input system (B.I.O.S) which resides inside the Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (C.M.O.S), which contains a code (software). The software tells the brand new computer what to do in order to load the OS. The OS is installed manually when the system is new. Without these BIOS, the new installed OS will not function.

The study of the computer falls into two categories; the hard ware and the software. To study the hard ware is pretty easy than the software because the rate of update of new software is faster than the rate of advancement in hardware. This blog will focus on both as time goes on.
